A History of Savage Arms & Tips on Mounting a Scope to a Savage Rifle

Savage Arms, Some Call it "The Working Man's Rifle."

I learned to hunt in the 80s with my dad and his friends, all laborers working in the iron trade. They worked and survived through the inflation of the 70s. The word Savage came up a lot around the campfire. Savage Arms has a long tradition of producing firearms that are reliable, accurate, and accessible to everyday hunters.

They produce a wide range of rifles nowadays, from utility hunting rifles to high-end precision rifles. They also make popular shotguns and handguns as well.

Savage Arms: Over 100 Years of History

The history of Savage Arms is quite interesting and dates to the late 1800s. It was founded as Savage Repeating Arms Co. in New York by Arthur Savage. The company was established in 1894, but Arthur Savage received patents for rifle designs well before that, including a hammerless design in 1893.

Today, Savage's most well-known model is likely the Model 99, originally known as the Model 1899. Based on Savage's earlier Model 1895 design, the Model 99 featured a hammerless lever-action design and rotary magazine and was produced for 100 years.

In 2002, Savage introduced the Accutrigger, a great improvement to triggers found on traditional hunting rifles at the time with creep and hard pulls. The Accutrigger was developed to have a crisp break and no creep, be user-adjustable, and, on top of that, safe. I must say that I am quite impressed with the Accurtigger.

Savage continues to manufacture rifles as well as shotguns and handguns today. The company is now based in Massachusetts and has operations in Canada.

Savage Arms continued to innovate, introducing other successful firearms like the Savage Model 10 and 110 bolt-action rifles, known for its accuracy and versatility. The company's commitment to quality and innovation helped it establish a strong reputation in the firearms industry. Savage Arms is recognized for producing a wide range of rifles, shotguns, and handguns, including their version of the 1911, catering to hunters, sports shooters, and enthusiasts worldwide. Its legacy of innovation and craftsmanship continues to make it a respected name in the firearms industry.

The Savage Model 10 and 110

Savage Arms had several popular hunting rifles in its lineup, and the popularity of specific models can vary by region and hunting preferences. However, one of their popular hunting rifles is the Savage Model 110 series. The Model 110 is a bolt-action rifle known for its accuracy, versatility, and reliability. It has been available in various calibers and stock options to suit different hunting needs.

The Savage Axis Affordable Quality.

To continue the tradition of affordability, Savage produces the Savage Axis. The Savage Axis is available in various popular calibers, including .223 Remington, .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, and more.

While the Axis is considered a budget-friendly option, it maintains decent accuracy. It often produces satisfactory groupings, especially when paired with good ammunition.
